Description:
This variety of Ginger was carried by Polynesians throughout the islands of the Pacific, from Taiwan where it has always been used by the indigenous population, to Hawaii where it is known as "awapuhi". Zerumbet Ginger is used in cooking for flavour, in the treatment of swellings, strains and bruises as a poultice, as a decoction for settling upset stomachs, for toothache as an anaesthetic, for the treament of cuts and sores, and for tinea and ringworm. The clear liquid contents of the cones are used as a shampoo.

Zerumbone is used to treat cancer, Leukemia, tumor.

Zerumbone is a sesquiterpene phytochemical from a type of edible ginger known as China Zingiber Zerumbet Smith grown in South China or "Zingiber aromaticum". Zerumbone is currently being explored for its effects on cancer in general and Leukemia in particular.

Dose-Response Relationship of Zerumbone in Rat with Severe Acute Pancreatitis

Objective: To explore the dose-response relationship of Zerumbone on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in rats.

Method: Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=10): sham operation group (SO group), SAP group, Zerumbone pretreatment groups at different dosage (5, 10 and 20mg /kg). SAP model was induced by retro-grade infusion of 5% sodium taurocholate ( 1 m l /kg) into the bile pancreatic duct. The rats of SO group and SAP group were injected with 10% DMSO ( 2 m l /kg) by femoral vein 30 m in before the operation. Rats were killed at12h after operation. Blood samples were obtained for detecting serum amylase, alanine aminotransferase and creatinine. Pancreatic tissue samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for pancreatic histopathological evaluation.

Results: Compared with SAP group, 5 mg /kg dosage failed to improve the levels of amylase and alanine aminotransferase, but attenuated severity of pancreatic injury(P<0. 05). 10 mg /kg dosage had the best effect on improving the levels of amylase, alanine aminotransferase and pathologic scores (P<0. 05). The dosage of 20mg /kg also improve the level of amylase and pathologic scores (P<0. 05), but failed to improve the level of alanine aminotransferase (P>0. 05).

Conclusion: Zerumbone (10 mg /kg) administered intravenously was the optimal dosage for attenuating the severity of severe acute pancreatitis induced by retrograde infusion sodium taurocholate.
